DIY Faux Stained Glass

So, I thought I’d switch it up a bit from all the Christmas-y posts I’ve been doing lately. I wanted to try something new today that I’d seen all over Pinterest. Well, not this exactly, but I’d seen a lot of pins for coloring glass jars. Most of them say to mix a little food coloring with glue, coat the inside, and then stick in the oven until dry. I took that idea, and did something a little different. I just wanted to try and make a design on a glass jar and see how it came out. All in all, I think it came out awesome! When I use a foam brush, I usually pat, or dab the paint on, rather than brush, because you get such streaks, but I actually want to try painting next time. The dabbing gave it a cool texture, but for other projects, I may want it to look more smooth. (If you give it a try, let me know!)

I grabbed a jar (one among the manyyyy that I’ve stored lol), and made a contact paper stencil. I used a Martha Stewart plastic stencil to trace my design, and cut it out with an Xacto knife. Then, I stuck the stencil on the jar, and mixed some Satin Mod Podge (although I’m sure the glossy or matte would work too) and a combination of blue and green food coloring. Like I said before, I used a foam brush, but feel free to use another kind for a different texture.

 

Very little bled under the contact paper, but I’m a perfectionist and had to clean it up. I simply waited until it dried a bit, and then used my Xacto knife to scrape it away. What I’ll use the jar for, I have no idea, but it’s sooo pretty!
